Chema García Ibarra (Elche, Spain 1980) is one of the main representatives of the contemporary New  Spanish Cinema. His films are known for "mixing costumbrismo – local social detail – with touches of cinéma-verité and low-fi sci-fi, seasoned with a singular sense of surreal humor" - Variety Magazine. García Ibarra's work has been selected in festivals such as the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Sundance (three times), Berlinale (twice), San Sebastian, Rotterdam, Ann Arbor or BAFICI. His 200 plus prizes include two honorable mentions at Sundance, a special mention at San Sebastian, first prize in the Avant-Garde and Genre competition at BAFICI, the Méliès d’Or for best European fantastic short film and a nomination for the European Film Awards. All of his films have been included in the top Spanish short film list produced annually by Cahiers du Cinema Spain magazine. Retrospectives of his work have been held at Transcinema (Lima, Peru), the Atlanta Film Festival, the Rizoma Festival (Madrid), the Brest Film Festival (France), Festifreak de La Plata (Argentina), La Sala de los Cineastas (Malaga, Spain) and at the Niemeyer Centre in Avilés in northern Spain. Since 2015, he has taught "Anti-filmmaking" as part of the Documentary Cinema Diploma at ECAM (the Madrid Cinema and Audiovisual School), covering the fusion between fiction and reality, narrative limits and the radical use of staging, sound, music and editing. Chema is now in Los Angeles attending to the HFPA - Film Independent Artist Residency.
